Paper Wasps and Yellow Jackets Nesting in Vancouver Overhangs and Shrubs

Wasps and Yellow Jackets: Now is The Time to Trim Shrubs and Bushes – Aardvark

Residents in Vancouver are forever challenged during the summer months when paper wasps and yellow jackets once again build their nests in some of the worst places. Instead, these attacking bugs turn tranquil outside areas into bullseyes, making even basic duties like gardening or sitting out on your deck a stressful challenge. Vancouver’s mild coastal climate and plentiful green spaces provide ideal nesting areas for these stinging insects to flourish near residential areas.

Whether it is a West End condo or a sprawling yard in Richmond, these pests tend to settle in overhangs, roof edges, and thick vegetation. Although DIY removal may appear enticing, these pests are too aggressive for DIY removal to be the safest option in Vancouver. So, you can reach out to pointepest.com for professional help!

Paper Wasps vs. Yellow Jackets: What Is The Difference?

Feature Paper wasps  Yellow jackets
Body Shape Slender with a narrow waist Stockier, more robust build
Coloration Brown with yellow markings Bright yellow with black strip
Nest Appearance Open, umbrella shaped Enclosed, football shaped
Nest Location  Exposed areas (eaves, branches)  Hidden spaces (wall, ground)
Aggression Level Moderate (defend when threatened) High (aggressive around food)
Colony Size 15-200 individuals 1,000 to 5,000 individuals

Physical Characteristics

In their flight, paper wasps have a longer build, with a visible waist, and long legs hanging down. The payot with its brown body has distinguishing yellow markings that set it apart from its more daring cousins. Yellow jackets, on the other hand, look stockier and have bright yellow and black striped patterns that are what most people think of when they think of typical “wasp” colors.

Nesting Habits

Paper wasps build their signature open, umbrella-shaped nests using a mixture of chewed wood pulp, which yields a papery texture. Such structures usually dangle from a shady ledge or tree branch. The yellow jackets will build their nests in wall cavities, underground burrows, or underneath thick vegetation, all of which means the colony tends to be out of sight.

Behavioral Patterns

In general, paper wasps are less aggressive unless directly threatened or their nest is disturbed. Yellow jackets tend to be even more aggressive, especially late in the summer when they switch from hunting for protein to searching for sugar, which is why yellow jackets are prominent free-loading picnic guests.

Colony Development

Vancouverites need that to assess potential threats when they know the size of colonies. Colonies of paper wasps are pretty small for social insects, only possessing 15–200 wasps during the season. Yellow jackets can balloon in size, with some colonies reaching 1,000-5,000 individuals during the summer months, making removal exponentially more dangerous.

Seasonal Activity

In Vancouver’s climate, both species seasonally parallel one another: queens emerge in early spring in order to start new colonies. While paper wasp nests tend to be less active in the fall months, yellow jackets remain active through much of October.

When Professional Help Becomes Necessary

Vancouver has an aggressive invasive species of wasp found throughout the city’s neighbourhoods, and DIY home removal attempts are known to escalate dangerous situations. Even one large sting or the disturbance of a whole colony without proper equipment can cause life-threatening hypersensitivity reactions and expose entire families to death.

Pointe Pest Control provides the lowdown on the treatment for the Vancouver climate and why you need to be aware of wasp infestations. Using specialized devices and proven methods, they effectively remove colonies while ensuring that there will no longer be any nests in the same spots. Their technicians know how different species of wasp behave, such as paper wasps and yellow jackets, and adjust their removal strategies accordingly. They also offer follow-up services to deal with residual activity and ideas on how to prevent future infestations based on the unique vulnerabilities of your property.
